Both Mr and Mrs Schmitz were my neighbors growing up. They were the epitome of God's love for all of us. They welcomed all with open arms and a smile!!! They truly cared for everyone and were willing to do what ever it took to help a person out in need. As a "kid" I would stop by and talk then get on my bike and ride off. After Mrs. Schmitz passed away, Mr. Schmitz still made sure everything was all right with his neighbors and would offer his many years of wisdom and lend a hand if one needed it. Mr. Schmitz taught me a lot about Warren and CenterLine having in the "old" days. I loved hearing him tell me about it. My most favorite memory though would be when I was waiting for my entrance letter to nursing school. I saw the mailman at Mr. Schmitz house and I couldn't wait another second. I ran down the street and in front of Mr. Schmitz begged the mailman to give me the letter. The mailman after a period of questioning and Mr. Schmitz telling him I was legit handed me the letter. I ripped open the letter and saw I was excepted. I grabbed Mr. Schmitz and while jumping up and down and crying gave him a huge hug. He was so genuinely happy for me and was proud of the fact that he was the one that shared that life changing moment in my life. I too was honored to always remember that moment with him. Although my heart is heavy I have a smile on my face knowing that God face me the privileged know both of them!
