Mrs B and the entire Baumgart family - we are sending our love and prayers from Yolanda and the entire Spence crew. Mr. B was one of a kind. To know him was to love him. Gentle, kind, witty, loving, always lit up the room and made everyone laugh. Too many fond memories to recite but he touched everyone uniquely and made an indelible impression carried to this day with all of us. A devout Catholic, I'd like to think he and my Father, Richard Spence, are at peace, together, smiling and guiding us as our guardian angels. Rest in peace, Al. We love you. Coach Baumgart was a brilliant coach who know how to motivate his players and assistant coaches. He was adept at reading the mood of our team and adjust our practices accordingly to get us ready to play our best football. He wasn't afraid to change up routines, make adjustments at halftime, or challenge us individually to get our best performance. He seemed to know what each one of us needed or would respond to as a player. I'll never forget when he pulled me out of a game in the middle of a series when we were on defense. He put his big hands on my shoulder pads, looked me in the eye and said " You're not coming off the ball. Take a break." I sat down on the bench speechless. A couple plays later he sent me back in. I made sure I came off the ball for the rest of the season. Forever grateful to a great man.

Great man and coach, just heard about his passing. I sure remember running a lot of 440's at the end of practice for conditioning...and what a treat it was once in awhile when he canceled them and let us head to the showers early. God Bless and enjoy paradise, good and faithful servant.

I was fortunate to be on Coach Baumgart's first football team at ND in 1966. What impressed me the most was that it didn't matter if you were 1st, 2nd, or 3rd string, he knew who you were! Went out of his way to include everyone in everything. We had a great year. Central Division Champs. But lost to St Ambrose in the Soup Bowl 6 to 0 in a heartbreaking but exciting game.
