Allen Joseph Baumgart's Obituary
Allen J. Baumgart age 89, a longtime resident of Warren, died on January 27,2023. Al was born in Detroit, MI to the late Walter and Agnes Baumgart. Dear husband of Regina for 67 years. Loving father of 4 daughters; Elizabeth (Daniel) Eschmann, Cindy (Fino) Amalio, Karen (Dr. Michael) Beckmann and Jennifer (Kevin Crabb) Baumgart. Grandfather of 8; Angelo, Alex, Jade, Jacob, Joshua, Serafina, Agnes, and Maverick, great-grandfather of 4; Olivia, Giovanni, Briella and Lorenzo. Brother of the late Walter Jr. (Paula) Baumgart, Lawrence (late Ann and late Alice) Baumgart, late Rosemary (Ralph) Cunningham, Barbara (late Matt) Priesz. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, a multitude of friends and indebted students. A U.S. Army veteran (and most proud of having played in the Blue - Grey game), educator, mentor and coach, he was a devout catholic who lived by his faith and put his full trust in God.
Al has had a 31-year career in high school athletics, coaching football and baseball. He has compiled a lifetime record of 132 wins and 80 losses with his most successful record of 77 and 11 at Center Line St. Clement.
A graduate of University of Detroit; he was an outstanding center on the football team. He holds a master’s degree from the Saginaw Valley State College, a member of the M.H.S.C.A. for 30 years and served as Director of Athletics for 16 years. In 1968 he was the “Catholic Coach of the Year” and “Macomb County Coach of the Year”. His football team at St. Clements won 7 league titles and a Catholic League Championship.
Twenty of his players are now coaching and three have made the N.F.L. His coaching career carries him from Center Line St. Clement to Detroit DeLaSalle, on to Harper Woods Notre Dame and closed out at Chippewa Valley in Mt Clemens. In addition, Al had been inducted into the Catholic League Hall of Fame, in 1989 he was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the University of Detroit Sports Hall of Fame.
A man dedicated to God and his family, his family describes him as a man who “had a great sense of humor, who was humble, generous, kind and always giving”. He lived by example “always be positive”, “keep the faith” and “always forgive” were the mottos he lived by. Al often went beyond his role as a teacher, coach, mentor and treated everyone like his family. Al indeed made a difference in many lives. Of his students, many went on to become teachers and coaches because of his direct influence on them. In retirement years, he enjoyed tending to his rose and vegetable gardens, spending time with family, friends and living his faith.
He has touched many lives and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be held at Rudy Funeral Home 25650 Van Dyke on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 from 1- 8PM with a 6 PM rosary. He will lie in state 9:30 AM at St Mary Our Lady Queen of Families Parish 25320 Van Dyke in Center Line on Thursday, February 2, 2023 for a 10 AM Mass of Christian burial.
