Joseph William Steyaert's Obituary
Joseph W. Steyaert age 77 of Harrison Township, died on January 3,2016. Dear husband of Carol for over 51 years. Loving father of Terry Steyaert and Shelley (Tom) Syrylo.
Joe retired after 37 years of service to the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command. During that time, he managed groundbreaking work on voice recognition software and military vehicle electronics. He founded and was the first Director of the TACOM Software Engineering Center, leading software development efforts for Army ground vehicles. He was well known and respected for his commitment to the Army and its Soldiers, his technical innovations and expertise, his strong leadership and his mentorship of young employees. For these efforts, he received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the Secretary of the Army, along with many other awards and commendations. He enjoyed sailing, fishing, gardening, woodworking and most importantly, spending time with his family.
